Capitol City Press was environmentally active long before the word "green" defined the process. You can see the evidence in our timeline:
1980s
Audited all chemicals to eliminate known health hazards and unnecessary solvents and cleaners.
1989
Assisted the Washington State Department of Ecology in developing standards for responsible chemical handling in state print shop environments.
1997
Designed a filtration system which allowed reuse of solvent, thereby reducing hazardous waste.
2002
Early adopter of direct-to-plate technology, which completely eliminated film and its processing chemicals while increasing prepress efficiency with far superior plates.
Implemented ink canister system that reduced ink usage by more than 40%. Nearly eliminated waste due to ability to mix very small batches. Most printers still use cans of ink.
2003
Eliminated the use of alcohol through upgrades to make a healthier work environment.
2004
Reached 75% reduction in waste from 1997 levels while more than doubling print volume through equipment upgrades and investment in new print technologies.
2005
Added a Xerox Docucolor IGen3 allowing us to handle custom short runs and variable data. It's been shown that using personalized variable data is so effective that direct marketing clients can reduce the print quantity and still show a higher return on their investment. VOC-free process.
2006
Integrated a Rampage Remote online proofing system which streamlined the proofing process and eliminated the carbon footprint of hard proof deliveries.
Designed and built a new facility with a layout that provided the most efficient movement and storage of materials. High-efficiency lighting installed.
2007
Achieved FSC Certification through SmartWood. The Forest Stewardship Council promotes responsible management of forests world-wide.
Signed up for the Green Power Program through Puget Sound Energy, which uses member monies for the purchase of renewable and non-polluting energy sources.
2008
Installed on-site water distillation equipment, reducing carbon footprint needed for delivery.
Added a GFI MX6 ink mixing system, which decreases the amount of wasted ink, decreases the need to purchase extra ink, and can create new spot colors from old ink inventory.
